In physics, the statement that the magnitude
of an effect (usually a force) at a point is
inversely proportional to the square of the
distance between that point and the point
location of its cause. Light, sound,
electrostatic force (Coulomb's law),
gravitational force (Newton's law) and
magnetic force (see magnetism) all obey the
inverse square law.
